I like your style, but everyone has been focusing on the economics for these past few months, it's the bigger picture we really need to be looking at. There are a lot more aspects to running an independent country, what about state security? What about defense? If the government is going to be taxing everyone, who will be collecting said tax? What about Customs and Excise?. The government has kept us all in the dark about these and other important sectors, especially about where all this 'new' money is coming from. Besides I think we are getting way ahead of ourselves and hopefully in a few weeks the whole indy2 will be mute.

At long last you are back. About time too!!

"so while replacing the Tories with Labour might restore some superficial normalcy to the business of government, it will do nothing to address the underlying problems. "

I think this is the best line of your article, which, I confess, I didn't particularly enjoy simply because it doesn't say anything new or that hasn't been said 100 times before. It would have been better ignore the latest SNP theatricals.

It would have been far better ( for her as well as the rest of us) if Sturgeon had concentrated on showing what a successful country Scotland could have been . Instead she has driven Scotland into the ground . Her economic vision and financial provision described in her ‘economic case for independence’ is no different from that in 2014 . Most concerning of all there are claims that the no- growth Greens had a considerable input into the SNPs referendum ‘manifesto’ . If that is true we better start building more carts and breeding more horses because that’s what will be needed .

The FM no longer connects with the people of Scotland as her time as FM has kept her far removed from the populous as is so often the case when people become isolated as a result of their position and power for so long. They become delusional and believe their own rhetoric. Also there is no one really behind her to stand up against her proclamations or give thought to stronger, political , or new ideas but relies on patriotism and blaming Westminster for all Scotland’s problems. My fear is she gets Independence and will leave Scotland for a global position where she can again vent her ignorance to maintain a profile as her arrogance and self aggrandisement believes she is entitles to!

Apparently Sturgeon says that Scots wouldn’t need a passport to go to England but surely England would demand to see a Scottish passport from travellers from a foreign country ? She thinks that England would look upon us with some sort of benign benevolence.

She never had any intention of managing her devolved powers ER. That would have meant engaging constructively with people, compromise, meetings of minds and a focused national ambition. Why bother with all that when you know your target audience are always happiest when they're busy hating other people, playing the victim and marching around swathed in flags?

Another event on the slow road to the demise of nationalism in Scotland. Everybody knows the snp cannot run a sweetie shop far less a country. Scotland made the right deal hundreds of years ago and it’s still the best deal in town. We are on the brink of a Labour Government so why would anybody vote for a border and massive cuts in public services and a huge rise in poverty.

Great piece: the thing that I take from this is the importance of a longer perspective on current circumstances: a lot of water has gone under the bridge in 315 years, and we are still globally relevant.

The delusion of a "long term quick fix", by constitutional downsizing in support of a faux expression of superior social morality, has to be continually exposed and debunked.

Truss has to be removed forthwith. It would be better if the next Prime Minister could face down Sturgeon rather than trying to ignore her. My favourite would be Gove who is an excellent communicator who would be willing to go eyeball to eyeball with Sturgeon!

Strange how there is no case for Scots to run their own country but there is for the Finns, Irish, Icelanders, Austrians and Luxembourg. But I get it. We’re not good enough. Never will be. Without the likes of Truss and Johnson how could be manage..?
